I just got two tickets, and will be looking for someone to accompany me to the June 23 event at the Zoo Amphitheater.
I almost bought a ticket to see Margaret Cho in Grand Prairie, TX on April 27, but balked because of the travel. Sooo glad I waited; now I get Cyndi Lauper and the B-52s as well, and more. I only wish that Rosie O'Donnell and/or Joan Armitrading was also in this lineup (it varies by location, see here for all the people involved).
The tour proceeds help various GLBT organizations, including local ones for each event. In this case, the Tulsa-based Oklahomans for Equality will benefit.
I strongly suspect that Sally Kern is at least in part responsible for this event taking place in OKC (so thank you, girlfriend!). This stop has only recently been added to the tour. I don't have any ins with the powers that be in the corporate community in Oklahoma, but I do know, for instance, that the CC had Richard Florida here a few years ago to talk about his ideas about economic development and the “creative class,” so they understand that Sally and her public ranting are not good for business. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few conversations about how some things could be arranged to counter the image that Sally's been propagating about Oklahoma. Just a guess.
I think rather than protesting Sally anymore, the gay community and its allies should start being, well, creative. Let's all decide that indeed, Sally IS responsible for the 6/23 queerfest at the Zoo, and send her flowers, balloons and love notes showing our appreciation for working so hard to bring boatloads of gay icons to our state to entertain and uplift us.
By the way, speaking of Sally Kern, sometime today PFLAG is going to release the full, 40-minute tape of its meeting with Kern (made with her knowledge), so as to refute Kern's lies about what she said. Yeah, she actually knew a recording was made, but still disavowed her promises to the group once back with her gay-bashing gang. Oww, the stupid, it burns…
