This is just happening as I'm going to bed. The BBC story is here.
Cuba's ailing leader, Fidel Castro has announced he will not return to the presidency in a letter published by official Communist Party paper, Granma.
“I neither will aspire to nor will I accept, the position of president of the Council of state and commander in chief,” he wrote in the letter.
He had surgery for some unknown condition in 2006 and his brother Raoul has been acting president. Presumably this will now be made official by the Council.
I hope this is the beginning of better times for the Cuban people, who have suffered both from Castro and from those whose hatred of Castro led them to punish the people.
