Canada rules against US AWOL soldiers

This is disappointing ruling from Canada:

Jeremy Hinzman and Brandon Hughey, who sought refugee status in Canada after deserting the Iraq War, which they considered immoral and illegal. The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear their appeal of a lower court's ruling made two years ago.

The Canadian War Resisters Support Campaign is a good source for news updates on Jeremy and Brandon, as well as numerous other GIs who fled to Canada and hoped for asylum there — including Joshua Key, from Guthrie, OK.

That organization is also sponsoring protests and a petition drive addressed to the country's parliament to pass a law to rectify the situation. Surveys have shown that most Canadians support asylum for those who leave the military on grounds of conscience.
