It may seem like moving mountains, but if enough of us do it, THIS WEEK, it will seem like a groundswell and they won’t be able to ignore it. Hell, tell your Tea Party friends and relatives, because if they are true to what they say they stand for, then they want those high rollers dealt with as much as progressives do.

Be sure to let your GOP rep know that you don’t buy the malarkey about the Democratic bill “institutionalizing bailouts.” Tell them you want strict regulation, and accountability, so that those responsible for the collapse feel some of the pain they caused, and continue to cause, the American people, and that this will never happen again.

Representatives Randy Brogdon and Charles Key are giving Sally Kern a run for the money to make Oklahoma radioactive for business development. Why? Because they might have to let law enforcement count attacks motivated by homophobia in Oklahoma. The conspiracy theory (there always is one with the Right, isn’t there, the poor little victimized bullies) is that under this law, anti-gay preachers won’t be able to warp the life of Jesus into a Citizens United documentary starring Fred Phelps as the son of god.

Did I say money? Where are the money interests, i.e. business leaders, to stomp out this insurrection insanity? They and few others have the resources and standing to deal with this appropriately. And I include The Oklahoman in that group. Hello! You shun and snark the Left out of existence in this state, time to do the same for these secessionist racist gun nuts.

I sent the message below to the state chamber, I’m so sick of this shit. I could not care less about the chamber’s elitist goals, but I do care about the suffering that the poor and disenfranchised will have to endure as Oklahoma scoots to last place in education, income, health, opportunity and every scale of reasonable human existence.

I’m sure this state militia story is doing GREAT things for efforts to recruit businesses here to create jobs and build the economy, like all the other back-asswards thinking coming out of the Capitol from these culture war neanderthals and outright racists.

I wish the Chamber of Commerce would come out and publicly and unequivocally condemn this kind of thing so we can begin to improve our profile and get out of 49th place on every life quality list made. Perhaps you could at least have a discrete conversation with some of these wingnuts (for sure don’t leave Kern out) and let them know that the business community will make sure they have well-funded primary opponents come the next election.

Or maybe the organization agrees with Reps. Brogdon and Key — if so please let us know, so all the sane people in OK can leave the state before the next civil war erupts at Ft. Sill.

Today’s “We the People” rally featured some great speeches from activists local and national. Too bad there was such poor attendance — about 150, I estimate. Rev. Robin Meyers’ speech was very thoughtful, Rep. Pittman was like a preacher herself with some great motivational oratory(despite the unfortunate habit of calling the SCOTUS justices “justices of the peace”), and Max Blumenthal and David Cobb, the out of towners, set the Citizens United ruling in historical and social context. The content from the podium was as good as any rally I’ve attended/viewed in D.C. or elsewhere.

I wish I wasn’t so depressed and stressed, I could do more than complain about the progressive scene in Central OK. Thanks to Barbara McKay, Susan McCann, Steve Hunt for getting the event together, and to all others who organized on this end. Rev. Robin Meyers, Rep. Anastasia Pittman and Reggie Cervantes were locals who spoke and did a great job rallying the sparse troops, giving a lot of motivation and energy with their tireless commitment and passion. And thanks to Max Blumenthal and David Cobb who made the trip here for what must have seemed pretty lame turnout, even for a state as red as OK.

There continues to be a lack of communication tools for getting turnout to such events, but without enough folks with sustained energy and will to fight against the tide, nothing will change.

I was told that most of the speeches were taped, and hope to be able to listen to them again, because they did the job of a rally speech quite well. Maybe with a recording, we can at least spread their message to all those Oklahoma progressives who weren’t there — and make them sorry enough to have missed it that they will be sure to make it to the next one.

Susan McCann posted this note on the Facebook page for the event:

TODAY we reached beyond Party and Administration on an issue that transcends and requires urgency of action. We were honored to have such a diverse, interesting and informed group of speakers and want to thank each of them for attending.

Photos and Video will be posted tomorrow and emailed to all.

Thanks from Change Oklahoma and We the People- Oklahoma.

Friends,

Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore are among those who have posted this message from the owner of the Crawford Peace House, who needs help if he is to keep it beyond this Tuesday. It would be wonderful if we could save it and turn it into a peace museum and resource center. In my opinion, it would need a new owner and management, but that’s an issue to take up if we can save it. I just cringe to think of how an unfriendly buyer will turn the place against the movement that created something powerful there in 2005!

I thought you might want to know the situation, and possibly want to help and spread the news — but time is of the essence. There’s an email address for Johnny Wolf, the house’s owner, in his letter below, which you can use for contact and/or to send a donation via Paypal.

FROM JOHNNY WOLF:

The Best investment I ever made

Seven years ago, I made a down payment on a house in Crawford Texas. On Easter Sunday 2003, it became the Crawford Texas Peace House.

We committed to being there until Bush was out of the White House, and we kept that commitment. Those years were important years for me and for the peace movement.

For a little over a year we have had a new administration and the wars we set out to stop continue and have to spread to Pakistan and still threaten Iran. The relevance of Crawford’s Western White House and our resistance has all become a significant part of history.

No, the mortgage did not get paid. I have not been able to meet my financial obligations on the Peace House, and I am five payments behind.

The Peace House is scheduled for a Foreclosure Auction on Tuesday morning on the steps of McLennan County Court House, April 6,

There is an offer to purchase the house for 10,000.00 less than what is owed. My personal situation will not allow me to take the offer. It needs a new owner 48,000.00 is owed on the mortgage. 4,000.00 will bring it current and cover legal fees.

If you are interested in a future for the Peace House please email me at WOLFISHQ@gmail.com

If an unfriendly entity purchases the house we will be served an eviction notice and must vacate the premises.

Thanks for all the Brave Souls that came here to make a difference.

In Peace and in Loving service,

Johnny Wolf
Co-founder, Crawford Texas Peace House

With all the excitement about health <del>care</del> insurance reform, and the resulting meltdown of conservatives, some important news has been overlooked or denied its rightful prominence. President Obama has reached an agreement with Russia for a 1/4th reduction in activated nuclear weapons.

It may be only 25%, but it’s a good first step, and helps build trust with our old cold war enemy. Frankly I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama found them easier to work with than Republicans in DC. Anyway, he is to be applauded for this critical step in making our world safer.

Treaty Advances Obama’s Nuclear Vision

If President Obama signs the treaty with President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia in Prague on April 8 as expected, it will give Mr. Obama a stronger hand heading into two back-to-back nuclear summit meetings where he wants to push toward the nuclear weapons-free world he envisions. At the two meetings, Mr. Obama hopes to forge international consensus to limit the spread of weapons and secure materials that could be vulnerable to terrorists, efforts that could be accelerated by the new treaty.

The agreement has to be approved by Congress, naturally. Get ready for a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth by the Cheney family and their warmongering fan club, including the Oklahoma delegation.

This is what will be lost if they succeed (which ultimately they won’t, but they will drive citizens to a panic, voters to the polls, and spend a lot of taxpayer money in the futile effort).

Together, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act will ensure that all Oklahomans have access to quality, affordable health insurance. The Congressional Budget Office has determined that these two bills are fully paid for, will bend the health care cost curve, and will reduce the deficit by $143 billion over the next ten years with further deficit reduction in the following decade. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act will reduce the cost of health care for the middle class, ensure health security to seniors, and provide tax credits to small businesses and individuals to further reduce the cost of health coverage.

Key Benefits for Oklahoma

Provide tax credits for up to 45,600 Oklahoma small businesses to help make coverage more affordable. [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10]

Prohibit insurance companies from excluding coverage of pre-existing conditions for the 918,849 children in Oklahoma, starting this year. [U.S. Census Bureau, 1/7/10]

Close the „donut hole‟ and improve other Medicare benefits for 575,000 Oklahoma seniors. [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10]

Reduce Medicare premiums for the 495,000 Oklahoma seniors who are not enrolled in Medicare Advantage and will no longer subsidize these private insurance plans. [Senate Finance Committee]

Ensure affordable coverage options for 639,000 Oklahomans who are uninsured and 142,000 Oklahomans who purchase health insurance through the individual market. [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10]

Ensure immediate access to affordable insurance options for as many as 86,641 uninsured Oklahomans who have a pre-existing condition. [staff estimate using Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), 4/09 and HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10]

Provide tax credits for up to 319,000 Oklahomans to help make health insurance more affordable, bringing $5.2 billion in premium and cost-sharing tax credits into Oklahoma during the first five years of the health insurance Exchange. [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10; Senate Finance Committee]

Reduce family health insurance premiums by $1,710 – $2,440 for the same benefits, as compared to what they would be without health reform by 2016. [Senate Finance Committee estimate based on CBO, 11/30/09]

Provide access to Medicaid for 331,935 newly-eligible Oklahomans, and provide $11.7 billion in federal funding for the cost of their coverage. [Urban Institute, 1/25/10; Senate Finance Committee]

Create 2,800 – 4,500 jobs by reducing health care costs for employers. [U.S. Public Interest Research Group, 1/20/10]

Allow 374,412 young adults to stay on their parents‟ insurance plans. [U.S. Census Bureau, 1/7/10]

Provide more federal funding for 45 Community Health Centers in Oklahoma. [National Association of Community Health Centers, 2009]

Affordable Coverage Options for Oklahoma Small Businesses
Small businesses make up 75 percent of all Oklahoma businesses, yet just 36.3 percent of these small businesses are able to offer health insurance to their employees. [AHRQ, accessed 3/20/10; AHRQ, accessed 3/20/10] Starting this year, up to 45,600 Oklahoma small businesses will be eligible for tax credits for a percentage of their contribution to their employees‟ health insurance. [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10] Small businesses of the size that qualify for these tax credits employ 205,316 Oklahomans. [AHRQ, accessed 3/20/10]

Protecting Children
Recognizing the special vulnerability of children, health reform prohibits insurance companies from excluding coverage of pre-existing conditions for the 918,849 children in Oklahoma. This takes effect six months after enactment and applies to all new plans. [U.S. Census Bureau, 1/7/10]

Strengthening Medicare for Oklahoma Seniors
Health reform improves Medicare benefits for the 575,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Oklahoma. [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10] Each year, 102,000 Oklahoma seniors hit the Medicare Part D „donut hole.‟ [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10] Starting this year, seniors who hit this gap in their prescription drug coverage will receive a $250 check, and the „donut hole‟ will be completely closed by 2020. The 575,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Oklahoma will see other improvements to the program, including a free, annual wellness visit and no cost-sharing for prevention services. Finally, by gradually moving to a more fair payment system for private insurance companies who participate in Medicare Advantage, health reform will lower Medicare costs for the 495,000 Oklahoma seniors not enrolled in Medicare Advantage, by as much as $45 in premium costs each year. [Senate Finance Committee]

Affordable Coverage Options for Oklahomans
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act contain several provisions to expand affordable coverage options for millions of Americans. First, health reform will provide immediate access to quality, affordable health insurance for as many as 86,641 uninsured Oklahomans who are unable to obtain health insurance because of a pre-existing condition. [staff estimate using AHRQ, 4/09 and HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10] This new $5 billion program will take effect 90 days after enactment of health reform.

Second, health reform will ensure that the 639,000 uninsured Oklahomans and 142,000 Oklahomans who purchase health insurance through the individual market have access to affordable health insurance options through state-based health insurance Exchanges. [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10] By reforming the insurance market and forcing insurance companies to compete for business through the Exchange, health reform will reduce family health insurance premiums by $1,710 – $2,440 for the same benefits. [Senate Finance Committee estimate based on CBO, 11/30/09] In addition, 319,000 Oklahomans will receive premium tax credits to help make health insurance even more affordable. [HealthReform.gov, accessed 3/20/10] During the first five years that the health insurance Exchange is operational, Oklahomans will receive $5.2 billion in premium and cost-sharing tax credits to further reduce the cost of health insurance. [Senate Finance Committee]

Finally, health reform will open access to Medicaid for 331,935 newly eligible Oklahomans, by expanding eligibility to non-elderly parents, childless adults, children and pregnant women with income up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level. [Urban Institute, 1/25/10] The federal government will fully fund the cost of covering these newly eligible individuals for three years and will pay 90 percent of these costs after 2020, compared to the current contribution in Oklahoma of 64.4 percent of costs. In total, Oklahoma could receive $11.7 billion in federal funding during just the first five years of this coverage expansion. [Senate Finance Committee]

Affordable Coverage Options for Oklahoma Young Adults
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, “Young adults often lose their health insurance if covered under a parent‟s or guardian‟s policy at age 19 or upon graduation from high school or college.” [NCSL, accessed 3/20/10] Starting this year, 374,412 young adults in Oklahoma will be able to remain covered by their parent‟s insurance policy until age 26. [U.S. Census Bureau, 1/7/10] In addition, once the health insurance Exchanges are operational in 2014, 595,060 Oklahomans under age 30 will have access to less costly catastrophic-only health insurance plans. [U.S. Census Bureau, 1/7/10] These plans will also be available to others who are exempt from the individual responsibility policy.

Job Creation
A recent analysis found that slowing the growth rate of health care costs will make it more profitable for businesses to expand employment, leading to estimated job gains nationwide of 250,000 – 400,000 per year for the next decade as a result of health reform. [Center for American Progress, 1/10] For Oklahoma, this could mean 2,800 – 4,500 new jobs each year. [U.S. Public Interest Research Group, 1/20/10]

Support for Oklahoma Community Health Centers
Community health centers provide critical health care to Oklahomans, regardless of their ability to pay. Health reform makes an immediate and substantial investment in the 45 federally-funded health centers in Oklahoma. [National Association of Community Health Centers, 2009]

In my own district, OK-3, here’s what the Republicans want to eliminate:

Improve coverage for 399,000 residents with health insurance.

Give tax credits and other assistance to up to 191,000 families and 15,100 small businesses to help
them afford coverage.

Improve Medicare for 115,000 beneficiaries, including closing the donut hole.

Extend coverage to 78,000 uninsured residents.

Guarantee that 15,300 residents with pre-existing conditions can obtain coverage.

Protect 800 families from bankruptcy due to unaffordable health care costs.

Allow 65,000 young adults to obtain coverage on their parents’ insurance plans.

Provide millions of dollars in new funding for 8 community health centers.

Reduce the cost of uncompensated care for hospitals and other health care providers by $117
million annually.

– more details

Other OK district benefits:
OK-1, OK-2, OK-4, OK-5

Update: Is it possible that those high and mighty state AGs who are suing the federal gov’t over HCR, and GOP members of the Oklahoma legislature, have not read the bill??????

Heavens, what will we tell the children?

Mike Pence holds a press conference for GOP response to HCR passage and all of three people show up. And those three don’t look very happy about the assignment.

No, I wasn’t crazy about the bill, but supported at the end it in lieu of nothing, yet feel quite relieved, even a little proud, now that its passed and the Left can get busy making it really work for people and getting insurance companies out of the picture. In their greed and hubris, the leaders of the GOP have painted themselves into a wacko corner of FAIL and I couldn’t be happier about their ultimate fate. It may not be this year, but the GOP as we now know it is history.

OK, I lied, the pic is worth a thousand words at least, but here are actually a thousand words or so (almost 3000 to be technical, and probably 100 links to documentation) about Republican fail, and all their many stupid, hypocritical and/or outright deceitful mistakes in getting to this point in their sorry descent into insanity and oblivion. It’s really a fantastic document that should be enshrined in the Smithsonian or something.

An open letter to conservatives (from Russell King

Dear Conservative Americans,

The years have not been kind to you. I grew up in a profoundly Republican home, so I can remember when you wore a very different face than the one we see now. You’ve lost me and you’ve lost most of America. Because I believe having responsible choices is important to democracy, I’d like to give you some advice and an invitation.

First, the invitation: Come back to us.

Now the advice. You’re going to have to come up with a platform that isn’t built on a foundation of cowardice: fear of people with colors, religions, cultures and sex lives that differ from your own; fear of reform in banking, health care, energy; fantasy fears of America being transformed into an Islamic nation, into social/commun/fasc-ism, into a disarmed populace put in internment camps; and more. But you have work to do even before you take on that task.

Your party — the GOP — and the conservative end of the American political spectrum has become irresponsible and irrational. Worse, it’s tolerating, promoting and celebrating prejudice and hatred. Let me provide some examples — by no means an exhaustive list — of where the Right as gotten itself stuck in a swamp of hypocrisy, hyperbole, historical inaccuracy and hatred.

If you’re going to regain your stature as a party of rational, responsible people, you’ll have to start by draining this swamp:

[And here begins the list all of us have been meaning to compile, for our children, for our children's children, who will have a hard time believing this all really happened. Do yourself a favor and read it, bookmark it, print it out for the Luddites in your life.]

Last week I posted about Rachel Maddow’s coverage of The Great Oklahoma Picture Diss, when a mystery legislator (later revealed to be Lewis Moore of Arcadia) actually moved the picture of President Obama, so offensive is even his symbolic presence in the chamber to some of the conservatives playing at government there. She called them “paste-eaters” which I got a big kick out of, because I’m a bit of an eight-year-old myself sometimes.

And in my twisted mind, it made me think of The Potato Eaters, the Vincent van Gogh painting of Dutch peasants. I shared my mental image with someone with actual artistic talent, in this case, Mitch™* of the brilliant Phototune image blog, and this is the result.

click on image for larger version

Apologies to van Gogh, and to Dutch peasants, and potatoes, and paste. They all are blameless and generally wonderful to have around, unlike these cretins who shame all Oklahoma with their idiotic backwards-thinking antics.

* Manipulated images to cause havoc
