View the virtual vigil | Light your candle now | Tell a friend

This “virtual vigil” has been created upon the milestone 4000th U.S. combat casualty in order for Oklahomans to demonstrate their deep sorrow for the deaths and a desire for real peace.

You are invited to add your candle to the virtual vigil. Your name and message will show up after being approved by a moderator — this helps us avoid spam or disruptive comments.

Thanks for participating and showing your concern for our troops, and longing for an end to war.

  4. I remember another unnamed war about 30 years ago. We fought for peace then and won. Those of us who abhor war and want to express our outrage at the current war in Iraq and military occupation by our troops in many other countries and want to end the lies and stop the glut of money being paid to the “independent contractors” in Iraq who are supposed to be taking care of our brave soldiers, but really are owned by the same people who tricked us into this war in the first place — a war about nothing more than money and oil — we must unite — we must unite — we must make our collective voices heard at every opportunity. We must attend every anti-war event, protest, and rally; catch the attention of the media and thereby the people; and start a wave of outrage strong enough to stop the Washington, DC machinations!!!! SING LOUD — MAKE YOURSELF HEARD — MAKE A DIFFERENCE — END THIS WAR AND BRING OUR TROOPS HOME NOW!!!!

    Candle lit by Janne on April 14, 2008 @ 3:15 pm

  8. I am lighting this candle for my son, who is leaving for Iraq this June. He is just 19 and my youngest son. This is also for his uncle, Tom, who was killed Dec. 21, 1981, in the Gulf War and for all of our brave men and women who are still fighting this insanity they call the Iraq War on Terror. The true terror is the waiting for the phone to ring or men in uniform to come to your door or the silence of the unknown when you can’t reach your son or loved one….may God please keep them safe and end this soon (yesterday is almost too late)

    Candle lit by Patsy on April 8, 2008 @ 8:33 am

  26. We will have peace.

    When each and every one of us,
    Completely understands…
    that there is no justification,
    for abusing another human being.

    When the Presidents says
    that you must kill…
    There is no justification,
    for abusing another human being.

    When your commanding officer
    says that you must torture…
    There is no justification,
    for abusing another human being.

    When you feel disrespected
    And want to start a bar room brawl…
    There is no justification,
    for abusing another human being.

    When your loved one lies and cheats…
    There is no justification,
    for abusing another human being.

    When gossips lie about you
    and ruin your reputation…
    There is no justification,
    for abusing another human being.

    When someone belongs
    To another race…
    There is no justification,
    for abusing another human being.

    When someone is poor
    not in your “class”
    There is no justification,
    for abusing another human being.

    When you completely understand
    This concept and practice it in your life
    We will have peace.

  61. Peace.

    Candle lit by Kathy Elliott on March 25, 2008 @ 8:49 am

  62. For all our soldiers, I wish you safety and a swift end to this war in Iraq so you can come home.

    For their families, I wish you strength and the knowledge that we care deeply for our men and women in uniform.

    For the people in government that began and still back this unneeded war in Iraq, I pray some day you will be held accountable (whether it be on earth or thereafter) for all the lives that you have destroyed. The damage done to our soldiers, Iraqi civilians, and our country by your greed is unconscionable.

    For the churches, I pray more will do their job of preaching what Jesus wants and that is peace.

    Finally, I pray that more and more Americans will overcome their apathy and speak out for the soldiers. We must support the soldiers by stopping the war in Iraq. We owe them respect and it is our duty to never, never let the government put them in harm’s way unnecessarily.

    Candle lit by Claudia Hatfield on March 25, 2008 @ 8:38 am

  63. May we learn to love one another rather than hate each other for our differences. I wish a safe return for our soldiers and peace for all Iraqi’s.

    Candle lit by Meaghan Green on March 25, 2008 @ 8:32 am

  64. My thoughts and prayers are with our service men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families- as well as each individual life that we are affecting by our occupation of these foreign lands. I also pray for our leaders. May they begin to understand the concept of peace.

    Candle lit by Fred Niggemeyer on March 25, 2008 @ 8:22 am

  65. My prayers go out to all the victims, families and friends who have lost too much.

    Candle lit by Cheryl Crichley on March 25, 2008 @ 8:10 am

  67. It’s time to end the occupation of Iraq and hold this administration accountable for misleading us into a war of choice.

    Candle lit by Judy on March 25, 2008 @ 7:51 am

  68. It is our duty to live the ideals for which so many are told they are dying - freedom and democracy. We must change our way of solving problems by acting to prevent human misery rather than avenging it. We must stop allowing greed to dictate our policies. We must demand more openness and honesty in our government. We must respect the dignity of every human being. We must stop living in fear and start living the ideals of freedom and democracy.

    Candle lit by Erma Stewart on March 25, 2008 @ 7:49 am

  69. 4000 U.S. deads and so many more in this needless war, this stupid war,and of course, a war that that only profits the ones that run the white house.

    Candle lit by Darla on March 24, 2008 @ 11:22 pm

  77. I have a long list of names of soldiers I particularly remember, perhaps too long for this space now. I have to say with sadness and anger that while the occupation–we call it a war but a war is between armies–continues and the numbers of dead grow, there seems to be less and less recognition by the American public. I stood today with the father of a soldier killed in Iraq, another mother whose son is in Iraq right now, and two active duty soldiers set to deploy to Iraq in about two months. And few others, but I’m glad those others chose to join us. Is Iraq, like Afghanistan, becoming a forgotten war?

    Candle lit by Jeri L. Reed on March 24, 2008 @ 11:05 pm

  78. This candle will represent my support and love for our troops who are fighting in foreign nations and for the ones who will never be able to enjoy life as it was meant to be. My wish is that this country no longer will participate in the destruction of humanity and the earth.

    Candle lit by Valerie Allen on March 24, 2008 @ 11:01 pm

  79. May this be the first and last “pre-emptive” war America ever wages.

    May the souls of the dead rest in peace.

    May the goal of the living be to create a culture of peace in America and in the world.

    Candle lit by Conna on March 24, 2008 @ 10:59 pm

  80. For the 4000 dead, the 30,000 wounded, and the millions grieving them, I pledge support and work for candidates who will change US policy in Iraq to begin bringing our troops home.

    Candle lit by Nathaniel Batchelder on March 24, 2008 @ 10:35 pm

  81. Bob Marley sez:
    “The people, who are trying to make this world worse… are not taking a day off. How can I? Light up the darkness.”

    Candle lit by James Benjamin on March 24, 2008 @ 10:34 pm

    Candle lit by David H on March 24, 2008 @ 10:20 pm

  83. May we learn from the tragic mistakes of this war. May we learn to question authority and our mass media. May we learn to beat swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks.

    Candle lit by Martha from Tulsa on March 24, 2008 @ 9:55 pm

  84. I light this candle in memory of the young men and women who gave their lives for what they believed was right.

    I hope and pray that the days comes when we will recognize how precious these lives were, and that we would “beat our swords into plowshares and not learn war anymore.”

    The only way their deaths will not be in vain, will be if we quit working for peace.

    Candle lit by J. M. Branum on March 24, 2008 @ 9:31 pm

  85. COME YOU MASTERS OF WAR
    YOU that build all the guns
    YOU that build the death planes
    YOU that build the big bombs
    YOU that hide behind walls
    YOU that hide behind desks
    I just want you to know
    I can see through your masks. (Bob Dylan)
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    When shall we ever learn that the tragedy of war
    is that it uses man’s best to do man’s worst?
    Candle lit by John MKHIZE on March 24, 2008 @ 9:23 pm
  86. My heart is wounded by the thought of these lives lost and the pain that it brings to all the loved ones still living. I work hard each day to push back the rage I feel toward those who led us into this, to myself for not finding effective ways to stop it and to all those who promote such a disastrous way of doing diplomacy. May shalom rule.
    Candle lit by Jay Hoyt on March 24, 2008 @ 9:06 pm
  87. I have been there. I also fought in an unnecessary war in which many thousands more died, unnecessarily. When will those who do not suffer any loss learn that these are human lives, they lived, they breathed, they loved. Those who sent these loyal, brave soldiers, marines and sailors to their death should have to live with the spirits of the dead and the loss to the families, in their dreams, forever. What a terrible waste of life, of potential, of families.
    Candle lit by Al Patrick on March 24, 2008 @ 9:03 pm
  88. 4000 dead, at least 33,000 severely injured Americans, untold hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead with millions more wounded or refugees - all in a war of choice based on lies. For the husbands, children, parents and families of all of these people, this war will never be over.
    Where is the outrage? Why do the media continue to repeat the Bush administration lies, including “the surge is working”? Why have the American people let their civil liberties be trampled? Why did the media only devote 3% of its coverage to Iraq in February? Where is the outrage????
    In November, the American people will again have a moral decision to make. A vote for McCain is a vote to continue the strategic disaster of the Iraq occupation, which has made America less safe, hated throughout the world, and allowed Al Qaida to escape accountability & reconstitute itself. Please do everything you can to ensure the defeat of Republicans in 2008.
    Candle lit by Kathy on March 24, 2008 @ 9:02 pm
  89. “Brave soldiers and innocent civilians have lost their lives in a war that the United States never should have initiated. The weight of the lies used to lead us to war has grown heavier with each death.” -Dennis Kucinich 11/06/07
    My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of persons who have died as a part of the “War On Terror.”
    Candle lit by Brian Sanders on March 24, 2008 @ 8:56 pm
  91. “For God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten son. For whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”~~~John 3:16
    To all those parents, grandparents, children, spouses, families and friends whose loved ones have made this ultimate sacrifice ~ their lives ~ for reasons that are still not answered, just continue to have faith in God and know that you will see them again some day and then your questions will be answered.
    Candle lit by Michelle on March 24, 2008 @ 8:37 pm
  92. In memory of all the fallen soldiers.
    Candle lit by Kristy Reynolds on March 24, 2008 @ 8:19 pm
  93. We must support those who have refused to continue this illegal, immoral occupation which is creating more and more terrorists, making the world more and more dangerous.
    And we must show up, vote, protest, write and make the change happen before year 6 is finished.
    And yes, we must not condemn those who are trapped in uniform and follow orders. They are victims, too.
    Mary Francis
    Candle lit by Mary Francis on March 24, 2008 @ 8:12 pm
  94. When will we humans learn that wars have never solved any of our problems; rather wars only perpetuate divisiveness and the sense of the “other” being the source of conflict.
    We’ve evolved physically but our mental processes are still primitive.
    Candle lit by James Nimmo on March 24, 2008 @ 7:40 pm
  95. Sad that so much life has been lost, May all those that have perished never be forgotten.
    Candle lit by Mark on March 24, 2008 @ 7:25 pm
  96. These brave men and women will not have died in vain only when our nation develops a foreign policy that looks beyond the discredited idea of “might makes right.”
  97. Does this really do any good or is it just making us feel better, just call me scrooge and tell me to shut up.
    Is it possible that soldiers could be doing some good over there, I guess we’ll find out when Obama becomes president.
    A lot of people think the soldiers should stand up and refuse to take orders but you have to put yourself in their shoes. It isn’t like you can just quit and walk home.
    When you’re ordered to fire upon a building you believe you are firing on the enemy (who just killed 4000 of your buddies) and it is only afterward you discover it wasn’t, you’ve just helped kill innocent civilians. Maybe the next time you will say no, or maybe the next day a suicide bomber injures two of your best friends and sends one home in a box, maybe you’ll just take orders.
    If you think you would do something different if you were in their shoes, I’m sure you are mistaken. Truth is, we don’t know what we would do in a situation we have never been in.
    Gotta Love em, because they need it, and I wish this would end.
    Never blame the soldiers who take the orders, blame only the ones who make the orders.
    I don’t believe the occupation will end soon but I am hoping that under Obama our soldiers will be asked to be humanatarians rather than brutes.
  100. TAPS
    Fading light dims the sight
    And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright
    From afar drawing nigh,
    Falls the night.
    Day is done, gone the sun
    From the hills, from the lake, from the sky
    All is well, safely rest;
    God is nigh.
    Then goodnight, peaceful night;
    Till the light of the dawn shineth bright.
    God is near, do not fear,
    Friend, goodnight.
  101. As a TBI survivor (Traumatic Brain Injury) survivor, I understand what many, many veterans are going through. It’s been 20 years for me, & I’m still affected in about 1/2 of my body. The effects are lifelong, & they will continue to utilize public medical facilities, costing taxpayers $$, for life.
  102. Let’s make 2008 the last year of this terrible war.
  103. May God be with the families, the soldiers still in Iraq, and all of us as we try to bring them home before that number gets any higher.
  105. My heart goes out to all who have lost a member of their family. We need to learn not to prepare for war, but to work for peace, understanding and equality for all.
  106. FIVE years, FOUR thousand lives, THREE trillion dollars, TOO MANY!, not ONE more life, not ONE more
    dollar, not ONE more day. Bring them home NOW!
    Candle lit by dennis on March 24, 2008 @ 6:04 pm
  107. My heart and soul cry “not one more, please God” but my head feels the futility of that cry. Every loss is huge and my prayer is that we can find a way to end this war soon, before we create more American, Iraqi and other orphans, widows, widowers, and others who will know the unquenchable grief that war brings.
    Candle lit by Pam Cross on March 24, 2008 @ 5:53 pm
  108. Let’s do everything we can to make sure this doesn’t happen again. In the mean time, lets help those families who are managing without a loved one because they are over in Iraq. Let’s also show understanding and compassion for those who have returned and suffering from PTSD.
    Namaste,
  110. To those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country, and to their families and loved ones, I can only say, “Thank you.” To those of us remaining, I can only say, “It’s time to bring our troops home.”
  111. Peace is the natural state when all hindrances are removed. Goodness is the natural state when all falsehoods are removed.
  112. May all beings be free from suffering, and the causes of suffering. May all beings be happy and know the causes of happiness. May all beings, be they near or far, seen or unseen, known or unknown, born or to-be-born, without limitation, may they all be safe, healthy, at ease and live in peace.
    Candle lit by Jeff Green on March 24, 2008 @ 4:46 pm
  113. A tragic, needless number. I sorrow for all the lost and their friends and their families, and for America. We have lost our way, and I pray we find our soul again soon.
    Candle lit by Margaret Cox on March 24, 2008 @ 4:45 pm
  114. Far too costly a price. We have bought the scorn of former allies. We have purchased an arena for Al Queda to occupy and from which they can fight us. We have paid for and will continue to pay for economic hardships for our country. We have made a dangerous down payment on bitterness and divisiveness among our citizens.
    Candle lit by Ivan Hutchcroft on March 24, 2008 @ 4:44 pm
  115. My heart goes out to all the families that have lost someone to the war in Iraq, be it one of our American soldiers, an Iraqi soldier or civilian or anyone coming back suffering from PTSD that could no longer face life. May the troops come home safe and soon.
