Adding my Facebook Links feed to this blog

I’ve set up a WordPress plugin to bring my frequent Facebook links into Peace Arena. To do this, I’m using FeedWordpress, a plugin that automatically pulls in content from feeds as WP blog posts. I was already using this plugin to import posts I make at some of the blogs I maintain for local organizations, but didn’t think of using it for the Facebook links until I found a tutorial about this setup by a Brit social media consultant at fluidblog.

With less and less time on my hands to write quality content I noticed that my blog was being neglected a little bit. Despite this, I was still cranking links I liked into facebook for all of my friends to read, and it occured to me that I should probably try and feed those interesting links into my blog so that it too felt the benefit of the regular updates facebook gets.

I’ve always considered Facebook an insular social network. Friends know friends, and anyone who doesn’t “know” you doesn’t get any of your content. Despite this, I recently noticed that Facebook provide RSS feeds for certain aspects of your profile, there’s an RSS feed for your status updates, for your links, and probably for some other stuff aswell. This means we can export that data to wherever we please, including into our wordpress blog.

I certainly echo that experience. I had begun madly posting links to Facebook a few months ago, gradually easing away from del.icio.us, always intending to go back and bring them over here.

Yeah, right, like I’m ever going to get around to that.

So using FeedWordpress is really going to allow me to pick up the pace here. I’ll try add a personal comment along with the link, which I only have been doing occasionally until now. I think this should work pretty well, but we’ll see, won’t we? If not, easy enough to end the import. Let me know if it’s useful, annoying, or whatever.

If you are also a “friend” on Facebook, I think you are going to start seeing a loop of news feed links being first links there, then a blog post, which then gets imported back to my FB news feed — at least until I figure out how to prevent that.

    Hey thanks for the link!

I’m going to do an update to that tutorial soon as I’ve learned it’s not entirely the best method. What would be better would be to have a system that automatically posted links both to your facebook and your wordpress – something like the quick blogging bookmarklet.

The reason is, the RSS feed facebook generates is reasonably bad.

Check back soon, or follow @fluidcreativity for the tutorial!
